Wisconsin Public Service’s (WPS) newest safe digging expert has a pearl of wisdom to share: Always call 811 at least three days before you dig. Pearl, a 7-year-old labradoodle from Schofield, has been named as the next WPS safe digging “ambassadog.”
WPS customers and dog lovers alike cast more than 12,000 votes for the 10 finalists in this year’s safe digging ambassadog contest. Pearl caught the eyes of people across northeast and north-central Wisconsin, receiving 60% of the pup-ular vote.
Precious pup to top dog of digging
Pearl’s path to the safe digging crown began when she was brought to Schofield as a puppy. Her owner named her Pearl because her white fur made her look like the gemstone, and also because it was the name of her owner’s grandmother. Pearl is anything but delicate, though — she impressively fought through a cancer diagnosis and surgery last year, and is back to being a happy, energetic dog.
Pearl’s favorite activity — no matter where she goes — is digging. At home, she hones her skills in a designated backyard area that her owner refills after it has been dug out. Pearl also loves to play fetch, take walks and spend time with her dog sister, Lola, who is from the same litter and lives nearby with her owner’s son and daughter-in-law.
Look for Pearl’s words of wisdom as the WPS safe digging ambassadog on the company’s social media channels and safe digging awareness campaign all year long.
