Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) will test emergency sirens at its Caldron Falls and High Falls hydroelectric power plants Wednesday, Oct. 28. Each facility’s emergency sirens will sound for up to two minutes that morning.

The sirens are part of WPS and Federal Energy Regulatory Commission safety programs. They are designed to alert residents and members of the public downstream of the dams about a flood emergency at the facilities.

Wednesday’s sirens are only a test and do not require evacuation.

In an actual emergency, sirens would sound continuously. In an emergency, the public should:

  • Evacuate the area.
  • Move to higher ground.
  • Monitor local news outlets for instructions.

Along with these tests, WPS rigorously monitors the safety of its hydroelectric dams across northeast and north-central Wisconsin by performing regular inspections on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis.
