Summer is here, and temperatures are up. Did you know that cooling is responsible for approximately 17% of your home’s annual energy expenses? Here are some no-cost and low-cost energy saving strategies to help you stay cool — and save money — all summer long.
No cost
- Shade the sun. Close blinds, shades and drapes on the sunny side of your home during the day to keep rooms cooler.
- Adjust the temperature. When at home, set the thermostat to the highest comfortable temperature to save energy. When you are away, adjust it even higher than your normal setting.
- Delay heat-producing chores. Wait until the evening or when it gets cooler to do things like cooking, laundry or running the dishwasher. That can reduce indoor heat and help your air conditioner work more efficiently
- Enroll in Budget Billing. Budget Billing helps you spread your annual energy costs more evenly over a 12-month period. It can help reduce the impact of seasonal weather changes that affect your bill.
Low cost
- Seal air leaks. Use weather stripping or caulk to seal cracks and gaps around windows, doors and siding. This keeps cool air in and hot air out.
- Circulate air. Use fans, even if you have air conditioning. Distributing air makes rooms feel cooler. Remember to turn off the fans when you leave the room.
- Install a programmable or smart thermostat. They can automatically adjust your cooling settings when you are home or away. Our partners at Focus on Energy have great product options and rebates.
- Schedule air conditioner maintenance. Yearly tuneups keep air conditioners running safely and efficiently, saving money in the long run.
